The ice rink is a long-time favourite for winter skating in London and is open daily from early until late, through to January. From late November London’s cultural hub, the Southbank Centre, becomes the setting for a whole host of winter festivities. Wooden lodges and market stalls line the Thames selling handmade gifts, seasonal eats and mulled wine, while an array of open-air performances keep the crowds entertained. While you’re there, be sure to take a look inside the two-storey Scandinavian-style Rekorderlig Cider Lodge, where you can sample tasty Scandinavian street food, washed down with winter drinks like mulled cider.

As one of the longest running equine competitions in Europe, the London International Horse Show is now in its 108th year. And attracting world-renowned riders and spectators in their thousands, this is the grand finale of the equine calendar. There are two exciting performances to catch each day, as well as a shopping village where you can pick up festive and equestrian-themed gifts.

This December, the resplendent Kensington Palace is hosting a special tour, giving visitors a unique insight into the history of Christmas at the palace. A brass ensemble even accompanies the tour guide for impromptu carols as you explore. The event is finished with carols by the 30-foot Christmas tree, and followed with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.

Hyde Park will be transformed this month into London’s much-loved Winter Wonderland as it returns for its eighth year. This year, events include a spectacular Ice Kingdom, astounding shows by Zippos Circus, and thrilling fairground rides, as well as a Bavarian-style Christmas market. Entry is free but as this is one of the most popular December events in London, it’s worth buying tickets to the bigger shows to avoid missing out on these spectacles.
