BeachEast at The Park

With the Olympic Games underway in Rio, London will be hosting its own celebrations within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which will be transformed into a sandy beach complete with beach bars, volleyball and funfair rides. In addition to screenings of the Rio Olympic Games, BeachEast will be hosting live performances from musicians and DJs.

The Summer Garden at The Shard

The view from the Shard is spectacular at any time of year, but it’s even more breathtaking this summer with the arrival of The Summer Garden at The Shard, a lush garden in the sky. On level 72 of this iconic building, visitors can sip summer cocktails while taking in both the wild flowers around them, and the sweeping views across London.

Festival of Love

August Events in London

Throughout August, Southbank Centre will be hosting the Festival of Love, with performances, activities and showcases all focused on this feel-good theme. This year’s edition will include the immersive show Klanghaus: On Air in the roof of the Royal Festival Hall, the circus themed family attraction Air Play, and the Rio themed copaCABANA beach, where visitors can tuck into Brazilian barbecue.

The BFG Dream Jar Trail

To coincide with the July 22nd release of the latest movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story, The BFG, Visit London have collaborated with Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and Save the Children to bring The BFG Dream Jar Trail to the streets of the capital. Follow a series of trails to seek out each of the whimsical Dream Jars, which were designed by different celebrities; look out for Sweet Dreams by Steven Spielberg, in particular.

The Notting Hill Carnival

This west London carnival has been a highlight of the capital’s summer calendar since the festival was established in 1964. At that time it was just a small gathering for the Afro-Caribbean community, but now it is Britain’s biggest street party with costumed dancers parading through the streets, Caribbean music, and a generous offering of street food.

Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House

Somerset House is a hive of cultural activity throughout the summer months, with many August events in London taking place in its atmospheric courtyard. Across two weeks, visitors can soak up the surroundings as they watch screenings of popular films; some will be introduced by celebrities, while others will follow DJ sets.

Cutty Sark Pre-Edinburgh Comedy Festival

If there’s one way to make a show even more impressive, it’s to hold it in a unique setting, and there aren’t many theatres more unique than the Michael Edwards Studio Theatre on Cutty Sark. Within the space where tea would have once been stored, comedians will take to the stage to showcase their set before heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
