Event: The Elixir of Love
Date: Feb 10th until March 16th
Gaetano Donizetti penned some of the most important and iconic operas ever written, but there is one piece which stands out above all others.
Back in 1832, Donizetti premiered The Elixir of Love and the passion and drama of this story captivated Italy and the performing arts community as a whole.
So popular was this 'rom com' that it was the most often performed opera in Italy for the following two decades.
Adapting this iconic piece of work can be risky but Jonathan Miller has managed to accomplish it, transporting the setting from 19th century rural Italy to 1950s America.
John Tessier, who wooed crowds at the Coliseum with his performance in The Barber of Seville last year, will return as Nemorio, a love struck mechanic with a broken heart.
He puts his faith in a travelling salesman who claims he can cure his blues and bring him happiness once again.
This passionate and thought-provoking tale will have audiences gripped from beginning to end and remind them of the operatic genius Donizetti possessed.
Following such a high-quality show, visitors will need somewhere equally impressive to lay their heads before exploring the capital the next day.
That place is the luxury London hotel the 41, which is less than ten minutes away from the Coliseum.
With the Get More From Your Stay package, guests are offered a choice from a bottle of Laurent Perrier on arrival, Champagne afternoon tea, a romantic turndown including chocolate-dipped strawberries, rose petals and candles, a three-course table d'hote dinner for two and a late checkout.
