This is the question that Tom Stoppard explores in his darkly comic and gripping tale Every Good Boy Deserves Favour.
Set to the chilling music of Andre Previn, the play focuses on a dissident who is thrown into an asylum and offered a choice - admit he is ill, accept treatment and then be released or spend the rest of his life locked away.
He refuses.
His defiance sees him locked up with Ivanov, a real lunatic who believes he is surrounded by an orchestra.
While imprisoned, the man is left to contemplate his stubborn stance and his decision is made even harder by the fact that his son begs him to tell the lie and win his freedom back.
