Ashington Group: The Pitmen Painters at the National Theatre

Event: Ashington Group: The Pitmen Painters
Date: January 23rd until March 21st

The Pitmen Painters will be taking to the stage at the National Theatre next month but guests at the luxury London hotel the 41 can see an exhibition of work by the collective which gave birth to the play before it is performed.

In 1934 a gang of miners known as the Ashington Group hired a tutor to teach an art appreciation group and they soon learnt they had a certain flair with a paint brush and a set of watercolours.

Their creative talents flourished and the collective enjoyed remarkable success and were soon able to count some of the biggest names in the world of avant-garde art among their lists of friends.

Critics and enthusiasts were fond of the way the miners depicted their surroundings and the group enjoyed remarkable success up until the 1970s.

William Feaver, the man who wrote the Pitmen Painters, which inspired the play, has brought together some examples of the men's paintings, sculptures and drawings for visitors to enjoy.

After the exhibition, guests at the 41 can take advantage of the perks offered by the hotel's Go See London package, which includes deluxe accommodation, a continental breakfast, a cocktail, aromatherapy kit and tickets to the London Eye.
