Event: Romeo and Juliet
Date: May 26th until June 13th 2008
The 1969 performance of Romeo and Juliet by the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House opened the market place, where Romeo, son of Montague, tried to declare his love for Rosaline before being consoled by his friends Mercutio and Benvolio.
However, it was not long before Rosaline was replaced with Juliet as the object of Romeo's affection and the first act ended with the famous balcony scene where the couple confess their love for one another.
Guests staying at nearby Red Carnation Hotels like the 41 can see an updated version of this classic tale of love and tragedy at the Royal Opera House between May 26th and June 13th.
Kenneth MacMillan's interpretation of Shakespeare's enduring play remains one of the most popular works of the Royal Ballet and tells the story of the couple's fateful chance meeting beautifully.
The tensions between the Montagues and the Capulets are displayed wonderfully in the physical bravado of the sword-fighting young men.
The musical score by Sergei Prokofiev sets off MacMillan's touching and fluid choreography perfectly.
Romeo will be performed by acclaimed dancers Edward Watson, Rupert Pennefather, Viacheslav Samodurov and Thiago Soares while the part of Juliet is performed by Alexandra Ansanelli, Lauren Cuthbertson, Sarah Lamb and Marianela Nunez.
