The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race

Event: The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race
Date: March 29th 2008

The sporting event of the year is almost upon us, one that requires endurance, strength, coordination and a hardened competitive streak.

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race will this year take place on March 29th 2008 and will see residents of luxury London hotel 41 streaming to the banks of the River Thames to watch the rival universities slug it out on the water.

Dating back to 1829, the rowing race sprang from an amicable challenge from Charles Merivale a scholar at Cambridge to Charles Wordsworth who was studying at Oxford.

According to tradition, the loser of the previous year's race issues a challenge for a re-match to the winner.

Nowadays, Race Day - as it is known - sees up to 250,000 spectators line the river banks to watch the two teams compete while it is televised on screens worldwide.

Guests at luxury London hotel 41 can take a guess as to which team will win the 2008 challenge.

Overall, Cambridge currently leads Oxford with 79 wins to 73, however experts had predicted a bigger margin from the winning Cambridge crew in 2007.

There has only ever been one dead heat in race history.
